Why Rihanna skipped the 2022 Emmys

New mom and billionaire entrepreneur Rihanna has two Emmy nominations this year for her lingerie brand Savage X Fenty Volume 3 Parade— and the special even won one: Outstanding Choreography for Variety or Reality Programming. But the singer chose not to fly from New York to Los Angeles for tonight’s Emmy Awards show.

The reason is simple: the categories Savage X Fenty Show Volume 3 was up for were already announced at the Creative Arts Emmys on September 3. Rihanna didn’t need to be at tonight’s Primetime Emmy Awards, where the rest of the awards are announced. (Savage X Fenty Show Volume 3 was also up for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special; the Super Bowl Halftime Show starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent ultimately won this award.)

It also wasn’t an individual nomination for Rihanna, which made it less critical for her to be there to personally accept the award or attend Emmy after-parties.

Instead, RiRi is on the other side of the country. Rihanna was photographed in New York for the past few days, with her boyfriend A$AP Rocky on Thursday, and the his on Sunday. The singer has been mostly focused on caring for her baby boy, born in May, with Rocky.

Rihanna will be released on September 9.

At the beginning of August, a source told entertainment tonight that Rihanna fully intends to focus on her work again as well. “She’s one of the hardest working people and she can definitely have it all,” the source said, adding that she “will be an active mom and have an awesome career.”

She and Rocky have been more purposefully low-key, the source added: “Privacy has become increasingly important to the couple. When it was just the two of them, they went out at all hours of the day and night and interacted with the fans. Now, with the baby, they’re a little more protective.
