A local liver transplant survivor organized a toy drive to give back to a children’s hospital where she has spent much of her life.

Avery Brusseau, 13, of Hartland, has organized a toy drive for Mott’s Children’s Hospital and community support is being sought to help him reach his goal of donating 1,000 toys for the children.

Avery’s mother, Candace, said the hospital has been a big part of their life since the day her daughter was born with rare liver disease. Avery had her first surgery at 25 days and her second at 7.5 weeks and from then on she’s been in the hospital pretty much her entire life. Avery then fell very ill at the age of 8 and was put on a transplant list.

Fortunately, Brusseau said she got a second chance at life and underwent the transplant. She said it had been an emotional roller coaster, but Avery was doing wonderfully and it had been three years without complications. Avery will be five years old after the transplant on December 1.

Brusseau says Avery had an idea after his birthday last year and wanted to be able to give back to the hospital’s Child Life Center. She told WHMI that it’s a place that hospitalized kids can go and basically ‘control’ all the pain and stress they’re going through and that it basically has every possible toy that everyone can think of and think of. it really saved their lives. .

Brusseau says Avery hopes he can drop them off on his birthday and give back to the hospital that gave him a second chance at life and saved his life so many times.

Avery is also a trampoline and tumbling athlete at Bounce in Hartland Township. Toys can be dropped off Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. All new, unwrapped toys must be dropped off by November 28, in order to meet Avery’s birthday goal.
